675 000 SEK Sale • Save

New and in-stock knotted rya rug designed by Karin Mamma Andersson in 2008. Handwoven wool on linen warp in at Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB, Båstad, Sweden by Eva Forslund in 2017. Marked AB MMF and KMA (artist’s initials).

The rug is recorded in the Märta Måås-Fjetterström archive under inventory number 38122.

Maj is woven in an edition of 5. The present lot is number 3/5 and number 5/5 remains to be woven. One Maj is in the collection of the Public Art Agency Sweden.

I wanted to get away from the figuration that is almost always present in my paintings and enter into a new mindset while still allowing my artistic soul to be present. Designing a rug is completely different to painting a painting. For me, the utility function is crucial. I love the fact that there is art you walk on, put furniture on, art that soundproofs, provides warmth on cold draughty days, decorates the room and makes us happy.
– Karin Mamma Andersson

Karin Mamma Andersson is a Swedish painter celebrated for her dreamlike and enigmatic compositions that blend elements of reality and imagination. Born in 1962 in Luleå, Sweden, Andersson often draws inspiration from Nordic landscapes, theater sets, and art history, creating works that feel both familiar and surreal. Her paintings are characterized by a subdued, muted color palette and layered textures, evoking a sense of nostalgia and mystery.

Widely acclaimed, her art has been exhibited internationally, cementing her reputation as one of Sweden's most significant contemporary artists. Internationally, Andersson is represented by David Zwirner and Stephen Friedman Gallery.
